报告摘要:

The efficient, reproducible synthesis of bespoke organic nanoparticles of controlled size, morphology and surface functionality in concentrated solution is widely regarded to be a formidable technical challenge. However, over the past decade we1-3 and others have shown that polymerisation-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a highly versatile, potentially scalable platform technology that enables this important problem to be addressed. In PISA, a soluble precursor 'A' block is chain-extended using a second monomer that forms an insoluble 'B' block in the chosen solvent (see Figure 1). As this second 'B' block grows in the monomer/solvent reaction mixture, micellar nucleation occurs at some critical chain length, leading to the formation of sterically-stabilized nanoparticles. Depending on the relative volume fractions of the 'A' and 'B' blocks, the copolymer morphology can be either spheres, worms or vesicles. In some cases, more exotic nanoparticles such as framboidal vesicles or lamellar platelets can also be obtained. Moreover, the basic principles of PISA are generic: such diblock copolymer nano-objects can be readily prepared in either water, ethanol or n-alkanes. In this talk, the focus is on PISA formulations conducted in non-polar media. In particular, we demonstrate that small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a powerful technique that (i) enables the rigorous characterization of spheres, worms and vesicles and (ii) can also shed light on the evolution in copolymer morphology during PISA.
